It’s official, Netflix are reviving Top Boy – and it’s all thanks to Drake. In a thread on Netflix UK’s Twitter the streaming service announced that they will bringing back the gritty Brit drama in 2019. They tweeted ‘Several months ago Drake came to us with a passion to helping bring #TopBoy back to life with the original creative team. Today both Drake and the show’s start Ashley Walters both released statements today via Instagram.
The episodes will be written by original creator Ronan Bennett, who will also executive produce alongside the original creative team, as well as Drake and his business partner Adel ‘Future’ Nur, and Maverick Carter and Jamal Henderson for SpringHill Entertainment.
Top Boy‘s new series will pick up as Dushane (Ashley Walters) returns from exile to his London home to reclaim his throne in the drug market.
Dushane teams up with his spiritual brother, partner and sometime rival Sully (Kane Robinson) following his return from prison, and awaiting them both is young, hungry and ruthless gang leader Jamie, whose ambitions could spell trouble for Dushane and Sully.
“Drake came to us several months ago with a passion to help bring this series back to life, and we’re thrilled to support the original creative team to do just that,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President, Original Content for Netflix.
A revival of Top Boy on Netflix was rumoured last month, while Walters has been teasing a third series for what feels like ages now.
Top Boy‘s new series will be available on Netflix in 2019, with the first two series currently available to stream.
